Explanation of Rankings/Scoring

These rankings for Minnesota residents are based on "GUN TIMES" - not chip times - for races that are run on certified courses in Minnesota and for which the documentation and results have been to submitted to and verified by the state long distance record keeper.

There are time standards for each division and distance. On the "Qualifying Performances" pages the time standards are listed next to the distances, e.g., for Women 35-39: 5k 20:00.

The races for which documentation and results have been received are listed on Races Used to Compile Rankings. If you have a qualifying performance/ranking that is not listed due to a missing race, please contact the race director. The contact info can be found at The Minnesota Distance Running Association 2020 Race Schedule.

There are 12 distances for which an individual can score points. The Total will be the sum of the highest 5 scores, with a caveat for the 15K/10M and 30K/20M. For the 15K and 10M only the distance with the higher point total will count. The same for the 30K and 20M. For example, if Kirt Goetzke scores 7 points in the 30K and 5 points in the 20M, he gets 7 points, and the 5 points for the 20M is disregarded.

For the Open divisions the maximum number of points for any distance is 20. And in order to get 20 points there must be at least 20 individuals who met the qualifying standard. If there are 15 qualifying performances, then 15 is maximum number of points for that distance in the division.

For the Masters the maximum number of points for any distance is 10. And, if, for example, there are only 4 qualifying performances in Goetzke's M45-49 division for the 20K, then 4 is maximum number of points.

Open divisions: 20 points for 1st, 19 points for 2nd, 18 points for third ... 3 points for 18th, 2 points for 19th, 1 point for 20th.

Masters: 10 points for 1st, 9 points for 2nd, 8 points for third ... 3 points for 8th, 2 points for 9th, 1 point for 10th.

Here's a hypothetical ranking:

Men 45-49 Total = highest 5 scores: 1M, 5K, 8K, 10K, 20K, 25K, 1/2, MAR, (15K or 10M), (30K or 20M)
Last Name First Name Total 1M 5K 8K 10K 15K 20K 25K 30K 10M 20M 1/2 MAR

In the marathon Peter and Kirt run 2:42:15 and Digger runs 2:44:01. Peter and Kirt each get 10 points. (Like tying for the gold.) Diggers gets 8 points, for 3rd best time.
